Keep your Audience Curious - 4 ways to draw attention to your brand

You have a brand new brand, or one that’s been going to work for you for a while. You know that new eyes on your marketing materials or website can mean new customers. So what do you do to get your audience curious? Here are 4 ways you can draw attention to your brand and get noticed by your target audience.

  1. Get personal. Share something about yourself - your passions, why you started your business, what you love about what you do. For example, a realtor can show some images on their social media account with a satisfied customer, and give an anecdote about why they loved finding them their just-right new home. Telling by showing is a great way to connect with your audience- post engaging pictures on your social media, share a success story on your website. Go beyond being a business, and be the people or person behind that business that wants to see others benefit from your services.

A personal fact about me - I'm a street art fan girl, and especially love everything and anything by @riiisaboogie. Found this one in NYC on a recent adventure. And I love this message on this particular mural: “Stay Curious”

If you keep your clients curious about what you do, or what your next great offer will be, and regularly engage with them on a personal level, you create that sense of excitement and connection that we social beings need. Which brings us to the next tip…

2. Create excitement and anticipation. This is not about making false promises or phony deals that attract clicks, but then only drive clients to more clicks with no rewards. Reward your special clients with a giveaway, some insider information about your new product, or sharing your personal expertise in a valuable way. But do create some hype around it, and this will keep your audience curious. Some ways to do this on social media or through press outreach, are with countdown posts or teasers - reveal a part of your great news, and then create a sense of excitement around it in each post.

So you’ve found your target audience and have created a database of customers or social media following, and an email list to reach out to them. Great! But what do you do next? Engage! Keep that audience, who was willing to receive information from you in the first place, connected, with relevant, interesting content. And do this by learning as much as you can about them, and what they want. This may not be an easy task, as businesses don’t always just attract customers with singularly-similar needs or interests. But if you believe in your brand, and find ways to show your passion for what you do or what you are offering, this will shine through in your content. Ask questions, and respond to social media inquiries and comments- don’t just post- engage and get to know your audience. Track your data and what they respond to the most. Ask your patrons what they would like to see more of in your shop, and what they love, and how hey think you could improve with even better offerings. You’re doing this for you, but you’re doing it for them too, right?

3. Keep it Real. Use images that are on brand, and messaging that speaks your truth. Don’t try to be someone or something that you are not, or follow trends that don’t represent your brand if this doesn’t feel genuine to you. Instead, try injecting some whimsy or fun, asking questions, doing a survey, asking for feedback, to get in touch with your clients, and find out how you can best serve their needs. Want to try out a meme or two? Go for it! But do it because it fits your brand voice and because you know your audience and what they will respond to, and not because everyone else is doing it.

4. Collaborate. You’ve built up an audience of people who know and love what you do. Great! But there’s always room for sharing the love, right? A great way to expand your circle is to collaborate with someone who can bring new eyes to your business. You’re a musician, and have a loyal following. Pair up with a local restaurant who wants to try something new by offering live music. Combine your marketing efforts, cross post about each other’s businesses, and each of you will likely gain some new fans. Give a shout out to your neighboring businesses - there’s room enough for everyone, and we’re all in this together, so why not highlight each other’s strengths? Tag them in your posts, give them some of your product to try, call them out on their greatness, invite your audience to follow someone new… and in doing so, expand your reach too.

And now a reference to one of my favorite de-stress podcasts - “Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness”, a quote by JVN:

“I want people to fall in love with themselves and to be really proud and full of joy for the space they take up. If someone else appreciates the space you take up, then that’s icing on the cake.”

Be passionate and energetic and intentional about what you do, and also about what you put out to your audience, and they will feel that too. Finally, pulling out all the quotes- “If you build it, they will come.” (from Field of Dreams in case you’ve been living in a cave). Build that business that you love, build up your audience by nurturing them in the way that they respond to, and then how could you not feel great about what you do? And the rewards will be icing on the cake!
